Code of Conduct

This Directive defines the expected conduct for all American Legion Post 86 personnel (members) while representing the Post or utilizing Post facilities. Compliance is mandatory.

I. Command Integrity & Core Duties

  • Duty of Honor: All personnel shall conduct themselves with the honor and integrity expected of a veteran, maintaining the highest standards of courtesy and respect when interacting with fellow members, Post leadership, and the general public.
  • Mission First: Post business, fundraising, and mission-related activities shall take precedence over personal agendas or disputes. All actions must align with the official purpose of the American Legion.
  • Fiscal Decorum: All personnel involved in handling Post funds shall adhere strictly to the Financial Protocol (Resource Management SOP). No misuse or unauthorized commitment of Post resources is permitted.

II. Decorum in the Command Post (Facility Use)

  • Respect for Colors and Ceremony: All personnel shall render appropriate respect to the American Flag, the American Legion Emblem, and all ceremonies, to include the Post ritual, opening, and closing.
  • Respectful Environment: The Post maintains a zero-tolerance policy for harassment, intimidation, or discrimination based on race, gender, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, disability, or any other protected status.
  • Facility Conduct:
  • Damage to Post Assets: Intentional damage, defacement, or misuse of Post property or assets is strictly prohibited and will result in disciplinary action.
  • Alcohol Service: Consumption of alcohol in Post facilities must adhere strictly to all Texas ABC laws and any local Post Standing Orders regarding the Canteen or bar area. Impairment that causes disruption or endangers others is grounds for immediate removal.
  • Digital Communication: All official Post communications (email, social media, website) must be professional, factual, and free of personal attacks or derogatory language. Members are reminded that their digital conduct reflects directly upon the Post’s reputation.
  • Officer Uniform Compliance: All Executive Committee personnel are mandated to wear the designated Uniform of the Day (Post Polo and Legion Cover/Cap) when attending regular General Membership Meetings and Executive Committee Meetings. Non-compliance constitutes a breach of this Directive.

III. Chain of Command & Dispute Resolution

  • Reporting Violations: Personnel who witness or experience a violation of this Code are directed to file a confidential report through the established Chain of Command, beginning with the Adjutant or Post Commander.
  • Dispute Resolution: All disputes, disagreements, and allegations of misconduct shall be handled internally and formally through the Executive Committee. Members must exhaust the Post’s internal grievance procedures before seeking external legal or public intervention.

IV. Violations & Consequence

Any breach of this Code of Conduct will be treated as an act of misconduct and failure to comply with established Standing Orders.

  • Disciplinary Action: Violations will be investigated and addressed according to the Discipline and Removal process outlined in the Post’s Constitution and By-Laws (Standing Orders).
  • Consequence: Sanctions may include, but are not limited to, official censure, suspension of privileges, or removal from the Post rolls.
  • Uniform Violation Penalty: Non-compliance with the Officer Uniform Compliance rule (Section II, Point 5) is subject to disciplinary action as determined by the Executive Committee. The Executive Committee is hereby authorized to establish, vote upon, and amend a mandatory fine for this infraction, with all collected funds to be deposited to the Post General Account.
